Preparation for ADF JHeadstart Workshop

Introduction

This document suggests some self-study tutorials you can do to better prepare for the ADF JHeadstart Workshop, depending on what knowledge and skills you already have. If you do all the preparations you will need approximately 3 hours.

This document assumes that you already have basic Java and J2EE knowledge. If you don't, see Introduction Java and J2EE.

JDeveloper

Download JDeveloper 10g, version 10.1.3 from the JDeveloper Downloads page. (Hint: It might not be the first one in the list!)

To get familiar with the JDeveloper IDE (Integrated Development Environment), you can do the following Oracle JDeveloper By Example tutorials:

• Get familiar with the Java development functionality of JDeveloper by doing the Introduction to the JDeveloper IDE (20 minutes)
• Get familiar with the Diagramming functionality of JDeveloper by doing Database Development with JDeveloper (20 minutes)

JSF

Get an overview of Java Server Faces (JSF) by reading:

• Introduction to Javaserver Faces - What is JSF? by Chris Schalk, April 2005 (4 pages).

You can get hands-on experience with JSF by doing the following Oracle JDeveloper By Example tutorial:

• Introduction to JavaServer Faces using JDeveloper (20 minutes).

ADF

Get an overview of Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) by reading:

• Oracle Application Development Framework Overview, an Oracle White Paper, February 2006 (11 pages).

You can get hands-on experience with ADF by doing one of the following Oracle JDeveloper By Example tutorials:

• Build a Web Application with ADF Business Components and JavaServer Faces (1 hour).
  This technology will also be covered in the ADF JHeadstart Workshop. Choose this tutorial if you want to be optimally prepared for learning ADF Business Components during the workshop.
• Build a Web Application with ADF Faces and Oracle TopLink (1 hour).
  This tutorial includes creating an EJB Session Bean. The ADF JHeadstart Workshop will not cover Oracle TopLink or EJB. Choose this tutorial if you want to see how other technologies than ADF Business Components can be used with ADF Data Binding.
